| Based on the 1985 Malta/Libya Case, which is marked as the eventual demise of the 'natural prolongation' principle being used in the establishment of maritime boundaries under the UNCLOS regime, this photograph shows the view of the Maltese islet of Filfla ("the unihabited rock") that the Court ignored in the calculation of the provisional median line. The considerable disparity between the lengths of the coasts of the Parties was deemed by both Libya and the ICJ as a fundamental factor in the dispute. The subsequent method of delimitation was based on a transposition northwards through 24 minutes of latitude of the Malta-Libya median line (ignoring Filfla as a basepoint). |
